Esophageal Cancer – risk factors, symptoms, and remedies


There was a time when cancer of any type was considered to be almost untreatable. The patients suffering from cancer lost all hopes and waited their plight to the next world. However, the scenario in modern days is not the same. The medical science has greatly improved, and treatment for almost every disease is available. Esophageal cancer can, though, prove to be fatal, it can be treated if detected before it is too late. However, the problem with many of the people is that they are not well familiar with its causes and symptoms. Despite experiencing the symptoms, they fail to get appropriate medical help as they, often, take it lightly and largely ignore it. If detection is done in the early stages and proper treatment is taken; esophageal cancer can be completely eliminated without suffering much damage.

What is esophageal cancer?

Esophageal cancer, in fact, is the complicated stage of acid reflux or gastro-esophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD. Esophageal cancer develops in the esophagus, the food carrying tube connecting the mouth and the stomach. There are two main types of it – the Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma that adversely affects and damages the squamous cells, and Adenocarcinoma that affects the lower part of the esophagus.

Risk factors of esophageal cancer

What are the risk factors of esophageal cancer? Knowing the risk factors is greatly beneficial in the sense that, it possible, they should be avoided. Though, there are several esophageal risk factors, the Gastroesophageal reflux or GERD, faulty esophagus, Smoking, Hiatal Hernia Symptoms, Alcohol, Obesity, Bile reflux, fatty and spicy foods, carbonated beverages, and caffeinated food products etc. are considered to be main culprits. All these factors also cause acid reflux, and it is wise to avoid them if possible.

Symptoms of esophageal cancer

Failure or inability to identify the symptoms of esophageal cancer can prove to be quite dangerous. Oftentimes, people fail to get the timely treatment as they are unable to identify the symptoms, and hence, they do not get the treatment as and when they should get. The symptoms of esophageal cancer include trouble in swallowing, chest pain, hoarseness, chronic coughing, worsening indigestion, heartburn, frequent choking on food, vomiting, and pain behind breastbone or in the throat etc. It is not that the symptoms guarantee the presence of esophageal cancer, but that the patients experiencing these symptoms should be more careful and get their health checked by the experts.

Esophageal cancer treatment

There are various treatment methods to eliminate esophageal cancer. The treatment like chemotherapy and radiation, targeted therapy, endoscopic treatment, photodynamic therapy, and surgery etc. are very much used for treating this. However, surgery is, usually, chosen as an alternative when no other alternatives of treatment are available. Again, the selection of the method of treatment is very much dependent upon the doctors. Yes, some of the methods of treatment may not be available in certain places, but that is not something that should prevent you from getting the requirement treatment. If the treatment facilities are not available nearby, one can go to the nearest place where treatment facility can be availed.
